Obligate avian brood parasites can be host specialists or host generalists. In turn, individual females within generalist brood parasites may themselves be host specialists or generalists. The shiny cowbird Molothrus bonariensis is an extreme generalist, but little is known about individual female host fidelity. We examined variation in mitochondrial control region sequences from cowbird chicks found in nests of four common Argentinean hosts. Haplotype frequency distributions differed among cowbird chicks from nests of these hosts, primarily because eggs laid in nests of house wrens Troglodytes aedon differed genetically from those laid in nests of the other three hosts (chalk-browed mockingbird Mimus saturninus, brown-and-yellow marshbird Pseudoleistes virescens, and rufous-collared sparrow Zonotrichia capensis). These differences in a maternally inherited marker indicate the presence of a nonrandom laying behaviour in the females of this otherwise generalist brood parasite, which may be guided by choice for nest type, as house wrens nest in cavities whereas the other three species are open cup nesters.  相似文献

Memory for food caches: not just for retrieval   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Many animals use hoarding as a long-term strategy to ensurea food supply at times of shortage. Hoarders employ strategiesthat enhance their ability to relocate caches such as rememberingwhere caches are located. Long-term scatterhoarders, whose cacheshave potentially high pilferage rates, should also hoard ina way to reduce potential cache pilferers' ability to find caches.Previous studies have demonstrated that this could be achievedby hyperdispersing caches to reduce the foraging efficiencyof pilferers. This study investigates whether coal tits (Parusater) indeed place their caches away from existing ones. Inour experiment, birds hoarded food in 3 conditions: when cachesfrom a previous storage session were still present, when cachesfrom a previous storage session were not present anymore becausethe bird had retrieved them, and when caches from a previousstorage session had been removed by the experimenter. We showthat coal tits hoard away from existing caches and that theydo not use cues from extant caches to do this. This evidenceis consistent with the use of memory for the locations of previouscaches when deciding where to place new caches. This findinghas important implications for our understanding of the selectivepressures that have shaped spatial memory in food-hoarding birds.  相似文献

In contrast to African Village Weavers (Ploceus cucullatus)that are parasitized by Diederik Cuckoos (Chrysococcyx caprius),introduced weavers on Hispaniola existed without parasitismfor at least 2 centuries until the arrival of the Shiny Cowbird(Molothrus bonariensis) in the 1970s. Cruz and Wiley (1989)found that Hispaniolan weavers had a lower rejection rate offoreign eggs than African populations. Subsequently, Robertand Sorci (1999) and Lahti (2005, 2006) found that acceptanceof dissimilar eggs is not characteristic of the species throughoutits Hispaniolan range. In 1999–2002, we studied egg rejectionin Hispaniolan weavers on a broad regional scale. Rejectionincreased as experimental eggs became increasingly differentfrom the host eggs. Rejection rates for mimetic eggs, differentcolor eggs, different-spotting eggs, and cowbird eggs was 23.2%,33.3%, 61.5%, and 85.3%, respectively, with higher rejectionof cowbird eggs in areas where cowbirds were observed. Althoughrejection is likely to have a genetic component, the differencescould be due to phenotypic plasticity. Plasticity in egg rejectionmay be expected, given the potential cost of rejection and thespatiotemporal distribution of cowbirds. Thus, egg rejectionhas not necessarily decreased in Hispaniolan weavers, but itmay act in a plastic manner, increasing where cowbirds are present.  相似文献

Fitness costs and benefits of cowbird egg ejection by gray catbirds   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Gray catbirds (Dumetella carolinensis) eject over 95% of brown-headedcowbird (Molothrus ater) eggs placed into their nests. Ejectionbehavior could be maintained by selection from either: (1) cowbird parasitism, if the costs of accepting a cowbird egg outweighthe costs of ejecting it, or (2) conspecific parasitism, ifsuch parasitism occurs naturally and results in ejection. Thisstudy tested the above hypotheses by measuring the cost ofacceptance of cowbird parasitism (n= 38 experimentally introducedcowbird chicks) and of cowbird egg ejection (n = 94 experiments),as well as the frequency of natural conspecific parasitismamong 229 catbird nests observed and the frequency of conspecific egg ejection (n = 27 experiments). The conspecific parasitism hypothesis was not supported because catbirds accepted all foreignconspecific eggs placed into their nests, and no natural conspecificbrood parasitism was detected at any nests. The cowbird parasitismhypothesis was strongly supported because the cost of acceptinga cowbird chick (0.79 catbird fledglings) is much greater thanthe cost of ejecting a cowbird egg (0.0022 catbird fledglingsper ejection).  相似文献

The Shiny Cowbird Molothrus bonariensis is a sexually dichromatic species, in which males have blackish‐blue iridescence and females are dull brown. However, in some subtropical parts of its distribution, females show a plumage polymorphism that ranges from dull brown to dark brown and even black. Plumage melanization has been shown to protect feathers from bacterial degradation, decreasing the effects of harmful bacterial activity and thus plumage damage. In this study, we assessed whether bacterial feather‐degrading activity is acting as the selective force to increase darkness in the plumage of the female Shiny Cowbirds in Argentina. We compared the degradation of female Shiny Cowbird feathers belonging to different colour morphs when exposed to bacterial strains isolated from subtropical and temperate zones of its distribution, as well as to Bacillus licheniformis. We did not find differences in susceptibility to bacterial degradation between brown feathers and darker feathers. These results suggest that female plumage polymorphism in Shiny Cowbirds has not arisen as a defence against bacterial feather‐degrading activity.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Numerous factors, including nest predation and brood parasitism, may limit populations of neotropical migratory birds. However, nest predation and brood parasitism are not constant, and temporal, biological, habitat, and landscape factors can affect the likelihood of these events. Understanding these patterns is important for species of conservation concern for which managers seek to provide quality habitat. One such species, the Swainson's warbler (Limnothlypis swainsonii), is a neotropical migrant that breeds primarily in bottomland hardwood forests of the southeastern United States. Little is known of factors influencing reproductive success of this rare, yet locally abundant, species. From 2004 through 2007, we examined factors influencing reproductive success of Swainson's warblers at 2 sites in eastern Arkansas, USA, St. Francis National Forest and White River National Wildlife Refuge. We used 2-stage modeling to assess the relationship between 1) temporal and biological, and 2) habitat and landscape factors and brood parasitism, nest survival, and fledgling production. Brood parasitism was greater in this population (36%) than reported elsewhere (≤ 10%), but decreased throughout the breeding season. Nest survival was comparable to or lower than in other populations of this species and increased throughout the breeding season. The probability of brood parasitism was greater near forest edges. Although nests of Swainson's warblers were often associated with giant cane (Arundinaria gigantea), nest survival had a weak negative association with cane density. For nests that were successful, the best predictor of number of Swainson's warblers fledged was brood-parasitism status: nonparasitized nests fledged 2.75 young, whereas parasitized nests fledged 0.60 Swainson's warblers. Our findings suggest that managing and restoring relatively high-elevation bottomland forests that are located far from agricultural edges should increase Swainson's warbler productivity.  相似文献
